A good Google Meet background keeps attention on you and hides a messy room. You can blur what is behind you, choose a built in image or upload your own. This guide shows how on desktop and phone and what works best for client calls.
Change the background before you join
On a computer, open the meeting link and look at the preview screen. Click the effects button at the bottom of your video preview. You will see options to blur slightly, blur a lot, pick a ready made image or upload one of your own. Select one and the preview updates at once, so you can check how it looks before anyone sees you.
Change it during a call
Inside a meeting, open the menu with three dots, choose the option for visual effects and pick a new background. This is useful when you join from a different room than planned. Changes apply immediately for all participants.
On a phone or tablet
In the mobile app, tap your video preview, then the effects icon. The same blur and image choices appear. Phones work best with a simple blur, because custom images can slow older devices.
Which background works best
Blur
Blur is the safest choice for client calls. It looks natural, hides clutter and does not distract. Use the stronger blur when your room is busy.
A plain image
Choose a light office or neutral wall image with no text. Busy pictures pull the eye away from your face, and some images make the edge of your hair flicker.
Your own image
Upload a clean photo of an office or a simple branded color. Use a wide image with a 16 to 9 shape so nothing is stretched.
Make it look better in three steps
- Put the light source in front of you, such as a window facing your desk, not behind you.
- Sit a short distance from the wall so the effect separates you cleanly.
- Avoid clothes in the same color as your background.
If you only need a tidy real background, a plant, a shelf and a lamp do more than any digital effect.
Before the call starts
A background is one part of being ready. The other part is the meeting itself. If clients book through a link, they arrive already knowing the time, the host and the video link. Read how to set up a Google Meet or see how a booking page adds the link to every invite. Teams that schedule many calls can review the options on the pricing page.
MeetSetup adds a Google Meet, Zoom or Teams link to each booking, so the only thing left to prepare is your background.
